Health Website Accessibility, It's Time to Get Started!

As 2024 kicks off, healthcare providers need to plan their budgets. Improving website accessibility should be a crucial consideration! It’s not just about ticking boxes; it’s a legal obligation. Yet, recent research found nearly a third of GP practice websites are difficult for patients to use.

Website Accessibility is a Legal Requirement for Public Sector Healthcare Providers

The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Devices) Accessibility Regulations states that “public sector bodies must comply with the accessibility requirement” to make websites perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust. In other words, comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2

Although public sector bodies have had to meet this requirement since 2018, a study in May 2023 found that two-thirds (66%) of UK GP surgeries’ have accessibility errors, potentially excluding one in five users.
