Sunderland City Council is helping more residents access information and online services by introducing the Recite Me Assistive Toolbar across its website. Since launching the solution, more than 67,000 residents have used the Toolbar to personalise their online experience, helping to remove digital barriers and improve access to essential council services.

Our Brief

Through conversations with teams across the council, it became clear that residents experience digital services in different ways. People who speak English as an additional language, have visual impairments, dyslexia or other neurodiverse conditions were facing barriers when accessing everyday information online.

The council wanted a solution that would make its website more accessible while providing an intuitive experience residents would actually use.

Our Solution

Following extensive research, Sunderland City Council selected Recite Me after comparing functionality, ease of use and value for money. The Recite Me Assistive Toolbar gives residents access to a range of accessibility and language support tools, including text-to-speech, reading aids, customisable styling options and language translation.

The translation feature has played an important role in helping residents overcome communication barriers, while the text-to-speech reader is now being used in English language classes to support literacy. Meanwhile, the Page Summariser is making complex information easier to understand, helping residents with lower literacy levels access the information they need with greater confidence.

“While there were several options, Recite Me stood out when we cross-referenced functionality, ease of use, and value for money. The breadth of features, combined with an intuitive user experience, made Recite Me the best overall fit for our residents and our organisation.

Feedback from colleagues working directly with residents has been extremely positive. The translation tool has proved invaluable in overcoming communication barriers and supporting residents with everyday tasks such as finding out bin collection days, registering for school places, and accessing adult learning and skills courses.”
