Calibre Audio

Calibre Audio has seen 10,000 Recite Me Assistive Toolbar launches since January 2026, helping members find and access audiobooks in a way that works for them.

A Recite Me customer since 2020, Calibre has accessibility at the heart of its charity. It was founded to give people who couldn’t read print a different way into reading, with audio becoming their portal to books. That same thinking now extends to its online streaming experience.

Our Brief

Calibre’s members have hugely varied accessibility needs, including people living with dyslexia, Parkinson’s, visual impairments and many other disabilities.

When developing its streaming site, Calibre wanted to make sure members could browse and play titles in a way that worked for them. This meant giving people the option to hear audiobook listings read aloud, change font sizes and alter colour themes to make navigating the site simpler.

The aim was to make it easier for members to find and access the audiobooks they want to listen to.

Our Solution

Calibre introduced the Recite Me Assistive Toolbar in 2020, giving members more choice over how they access and navigate its streaming site.

Text-to-speech has become particularly important. Many Calibre members rely on audio because they cannot read printed text, so being able to listen to the content of a webpage can help them navigate towards the books they want to enjoy.

The usage reflects this. Between January and August 2026, text-to-speech was used more than 10,800 times, while more than 41,000 pages were viewed with the Toolbar active.

Calibre has heard from lots of its members that Recite Me has made their experience on the streaming site easier.

“The text to speech feature is important to us because our members often can’t read text. They rely on audio as their method of reading books, so it makes sense that they would need assistance reading a web page.

For many of our members, being able to hear the words on the web page is the difference between navigating to audiobooks or not, so it’s hugely beneficial.

We’re so pleased to have had 10,000 toolbar launches on our site. It means that we’re helping members find their audiobooks without barriers, giving them easier access to a world of reading, escapism, learning and joy.”
