Prostate Cancer UK is now able to share life-saving information and support further and faster with Recite Me’s Translation Tool. With content available in over 200 languages, the charity has reduced translation time and costs, expanded its reach, and made vital prostate cancer information accessible to more men and their loved ones.

Jonathan Kay, Health Information Service Lead at Prostate Cancer UK, shares his insights on how Recite Me’s language and neurodiversity tools are transforming their website.

Black men are twice as likely to develop prostate cancer (1 in 4) compared to the general population (1 in 8). To support as many men as possible, Prostate Cancer UK needed a solution that could translate its entire information library into both written and spoken formats, without requiring extra demands on staff or resources. That’s when they discovered Recite Me.

“Our research has shown that there are many Black men in the UK who originate from Northern Africa, and have a limited understanding of English. Now they can access information in a format that is easy to understand.”

Addressing All Needs with the Recite Me Toolbar

Since implementing the toolbar in October 2023, Prostate Cancer UK has made its website more inclusive for people with disabilities, visual impairments, and those who speak English as a second language.

Alongside translating content, users can also read aloud using the screen reader, adjust the website’s appearance with styling and customisation tools and enhance comprehension with built-in reading aids.

“Overall, the range of options and how easy it is to use the Recite Me Toolbar were the two main reasons for us picking Recite Me as our technology partner.”

The commitment to accessibility has also been noticed externally. During recent recruitment interviews for a Clinical Nurse Specialist, several candidates remarked on their impression of the charity’s dedication to inclusivity.

Expanding Access to Vital Patient Guidance

Over 800 users access the translation feature each month. Over the past 12 months, Recite Me has had a significant impact on Prostate Cancer UK’s website:

Recite Me has also streamlined responses to translation requests from clinicians.

“Previously, we would not have been able to meet their request, but now we can explain how they can support their patients to use the tool themselves or offer a version that they can print and use themselves.”
