36 for 36 digital accessibility champion
Communications Director, Calhoun County Area Chamber & Visitors Center
Ashlee Jones has been Communications Director at the Calhoun County Area Chamber & Visitors Center for seven years. Since 2023, she has headed its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion/Economic Inclusion committee, which focuses on improving accessibility and economic mobility in the community.
We’re recognizing Ashlee as a 36 for 36 Digital Accessibility Champion for the work outlined in her nomination, including sharing community resources digitally and pursuing improvements to how people access the Chamber and its meetings.
Offered through the Chamber’s status as a Google Partner, the scholarships support career certification, workforce development and economic development.
The committee’s programming includes Grow with Google scholarships through Coursera for local residents aged 18 and older.
This summer, the Economic Inclusion committee held a Community Resource Fair at a local mall to raise awareness of nonprofits and government agencies offering services and assistance.
Participants included a domestic abuse shelter and sexual assault hotline, the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services, and Community Enabler Developer, Inc., which helps residents with food, clothing, utilities and rent assistance.
For people unable to attend in person, the resources were compiled digitally, together with contact details for each organization.
The Chamber has also offered the Recite Me Assistive Toolbar on its website for two years, supporting more inclusive online journeys.
In 2025, Ashlee applied for a community foundation grant to automate the Chamber’s side entrance. She had noticed visitors using mobility aids struggling to enter without assistance.
The grant was not awarded. In her nomination, Ashlee expressed confidence that funding could be secured in the future.
The Chamber currently offers a built-in speaker system and microphones in its boardroom. Ashlee also described possible further improvements, subject to available facilities funding, including overhead microphones and an automated visual conference call system to better accommodate guests and board members with hearing or vision loss.
She would also like to introduce automated closed captioning for in-person meetings. Currently, captions are available through Zoom for virtual attendees.
In her nomination, Ashlee said:
“While we have made progress there is always room to grow, and I look forward to our continued efforts to improve our organization for all of our residents and guests to the area to enjoy our Chamber and Visitors Center.”
Ashlee joins the Digital Accessibility Champions recognized through Recite Me’s 36 for 36 campaign, marking the Americans with Disabilities Act’s 36th anniversary.
