The Ulster County Library Association (UCLA) is making a big impact by making its libraries more accessible and inclusive. Thanks to the rollout of Recite Me’s assistive toolbar in 2022, 21 libraries in the Ulster County network now offer better support for people with disabilities, language barriers, and varying learning needs.

Library’s Collaboration with Purpose

UCLA is all about collaboration. Bringing together the public libraries in Ulster County, the association helps libraries pool their resources, share knowledge, and fund important initiatives that benefit the entire community. From securing funding and coordinating information to leading special projects, UCLA’s goal is to help libraries thrive and serve everyone more effectively.

Adding Recite Me was a natural step in that mission. We caught up with Kara Lustiber, Treasurer at Ulster County Library who shared:

quote

“When the Ulster County Library Association reviewed Recite Me, it was one of the few projects that received universal approval and excitement. It just makes so much sense to make our web resources available to as many people as possible, regardless of physical disability or language needs. Once we purchased the platform, it was so easy to implement that we breathed another sigh of relief. Although the platform is affordable, its value exceeds the amount we paid for it.”

Digital accessibility is more important than ever. In a recent survey conducted by Click-Away Pound, it was found that 72% of participants with access needs said they experienced barriers on more than a quarter of websites they visited for the first time. Providing additional aid online is imperative to enhance the user experience for a diverse audience and to retain their attention.

The accessibility and language toolbar on the Ulster County Library Association websites provides features such as screen reading functionality, multiple reading aids, customizable styling options, and an on-demand live translation feature that boasts over 100 languages including 65 text-to-speech and styling options.
