Clinton-Macomb Public Library

As a community-centered institution, Clinton-Macomb Public Library (CMPL) knows that access to information is a right, not a privilege. That means ensuring every member of the community – regardless of ability, neurodiversity, or primary language can engage with the resources and services available to them online.

To support this mission, CMPL partnered with Recite Me to integrate assistive technology across its website, creating a more inclusive and accessible digital experience for all library patrons. The library also wanted to better understand and address compliance gaps, so it could continue improving its digital platforms in a structured, sustainable way.

Our Brief

Digital inclusion is central to what public libraries stand for, and CMPL was committed to ensuring its online presence reflected that.

With the DOJ deadline for Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) approaching, the library recognized the urgency of taking proactive, meaningful action. Rather than waiting for compliance pressure to mount, CMPL chose to invest in tools that would genuinely improve the experience for every visitor to its website.

The library sought a solution that could address a wide range of user needs, from those with visual impairments and learning difficulties to patrons whose first language isn’t English. It also needed a way to identify and resolve existing accessibility issues efficiently, without overburdening its internal teams.

Our Solution

CMPL introduced two key Recite Me solutions across its website: the Recite Me Assistive Toolbar and the Recite Me Accessibility Checker.

Patrons now have more control over how they experience content online. Some can utilize the text-to-speech function to read books out loud, font or spacing to make pages easier to read. These tools help remove barriers for users with a wide range of access needs, ensuring that everyone can engage with the library’s digital resources.

Alongside the Toolbar, CMPL adopted the Recite Me Accessibility Checker to support its compliance journey. The Checker provides teams with a clear breakdown of any issues identified – including a plain-language explanation, a front-end screenshot, a relevant code snippet, and step-by-step guidance on how to resolve issues.

This made working toward WCAG 2.2 AA compliance significantly more efficient and repeatable across the library’s domains.

"The ability to run the Recite Me checker is fantastic. It allows us to be compliant and have the expertise available to help us address issues. The information gathered from the reports of Recite Me points to the specific problem. This has allowed any issues that come up to be addressed quickly and efficiently."
