Understanding Compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act

Organizations operating in the United States need to ensure their websites are fully accessible to people with disabilities. This includes aligning your digital content with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to meet recognised accessibility standards.

Key Facts to become ADA compliant

To meet ADA requirements websites, PDFs, videos, and all digital content must be accessible

Websites should target WCAG 2.1 Level AA as the standard for ADA compliance

Public entities serving over 50,000 residents must be ADA compliant by April 2026

Private organizations are required to comply with Title III of the ADA

More than 4,000 ADA digital accessibility lawsuits were filed last year

Why ADA Compliance is so important

Prepare for the DOJ ADA Website Accessibility Deadline

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced that public entities serving more than 50,000 residents must achieve ADA compliance by April 2026, with a second deadline of April 2027 for those serving fewer than 50,000 residents. For government and state websites, this makes immediate action essential, as ADA compliance will be actively enforced.

This is the first time the DOJ has adopted a specific technical standard for digital accessibility under Title II: the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. To ensure compliance you will need to meet these guidelines before the deadline. To ensure compliance, organisations must meet these requirements ahead of the relevant deadline.

ADA Accessibility Checker FAQs

Our ADA accessibility checker is a digital tool that scans websites or documents to identify barriers that may prevent people with disabilities from accessing content. This tool help organisations understand whether their site aligns with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and recognised technical standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

Our ADA compliance checker is useful for any organization that needs to become ADA compliant or make their website more accessible.

Not entirely. An ADA compliance checker can identify many of the issues that need attention, but it’s up to you to implement the fixes. Pairing the tool with your own manual checks and audits will also give you a far more accurate and reliable result.

The ADA compliance checker evaluates your site against all WCAG 2.2 criteria; covering levels A, AA, and AAA. Some of the most frequently encountered issues include:

  • Missing or inappropriate alt text
  • Insufficient colour contrast
  • Improper heading structure
  • Unlabelled form fields
  • Non-descriptive link text
  • Keyboard accessibility problems
  • ARIA misuse or errors

WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) provides the technical criteria for making websites accessible. The ADA is a civil rights law. While the ADA does not explicitly cite WCAG, WCAG is widely accepted as the standard used to measure digital accessibility under the law.

Our ADA accessibility checker can handle some automated fixes using AI, but many issues will still require manual adjustments based on the tool’s recommendations.
