From Commitment to Action: King School’s Journey to a More Inclusive Digital Experience

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging are integrated into every area of school life at King School. Ensuring that every member of the community enjoys a sense of belonging is paramount to the school’s mission and aligns with their goal to empower every student to find their voice and respect the voice of others.

The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) team works in every area of the school and offers guidance and support to ensure that the curriculum, pedagogy, recruiting, retention, and school culture are a reflection of their commitment to being an inclusive institution.

As businesses and teams prepare for 2025, inclusion and accessibility are emerging as top priorities. In today’s diverse global marketplace, inclusion is more than just a buzzword or a ‘nice-to-have’ on your DE&I checklist—it’s a strategic imperative. 

We caught up with marketing thought leader, Lakeya Newton, Director of Marketing and Staff DEIB Coordinator at King School, to share her insights on the importance of prioritizing accessibility and inclusion to reach a wider audience, and the steps King School has taken, and their decision to implement Recite Me technology on their website. 

As the Director of Marketing at King School, why is inclusion and accessibility important to you and the school?

We have a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB). We also support different types of learners. Our website is an extension of our brand and reputation, so it should also feel inclusive. It is our biggest marketing to next to word of mouth.

How does prioritizing inclusion across all age groups contribute to enhancing your school’s mission?

We have a commitment to DEIB and our mission states that we embrace diversity in all forms.

Were there any specific marketing goals, such as expanding reach or improving user experience, that influenced your decision to implement Recite Me technology?

We knew that we had visitors who needed to use our website and may need accessibility services, and we wanted to provide them with something that could help with languages and more. We know that many people may use a page reader or could have other external tools, but we wanted something for our site that showed that we care front and center.

From a marketing perspective, what do you hope to gain in the long term from adding Recite Me technology?

I’m hoping that we can appeal to a wider audience. I’ve already noticed an uptick in the use of translation as the most used aspect of Recite Me.
