Sefton Council

Sefton Council is the governing body for the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in Merseyside, North-West England. The Council is responsible for all residential and business matters from social care, recycling and waste to commercial property and tenders.

Our Brief

The council’s mission is to deliver good Local Authority-managed services in Sefton to all that live, visit and work there. To continue their great work, Sefton Council was looking for a web accessibility solution to make their website inclusive to the widest possible audience.

Our Solution

To support everyone online accessing key information about Sefton Council, the Recite Me accessibility and language toolbar was installed.

At a single click of the “listen and translate” button at the top of the website, any web visitor is able to customise the Sefton Council website in a way that works best for them.

The toolbar gives users several options to make reading easier, such as having the text read aloud to them or changing font sizes and colours. These features will help make the site as accessible as possible to people of all ages, including people with disabilities, learning difficulties or other communication preferences.

Recite Me can also translate any written content on demand into over 100 different languages, including 65 text-to-speech voices and many other features.

“The borough of Sefton has a diverse population with residents who require additional support when using our website. This ranges from multiple language support, font and colour contrast changes, audio assistance and so much more. Meeting this need is important to us as we want to reach those with a wide variety of communication needs and to ensure we are inclusive and accessible. All our residents and visitors need to be included and empowered in our communities and access to information is a vital part of this. Recite Me has helped us to meet this vital requirement, offering a range of features supporting a wide range of communication needs, including people with learning disabilities, those with a hearing or visual impairment including those for who English is not their first language. This feature has been crucial during the COVID-19 situation; where clear communication and accessible information has been an important element in stopping the spread of the virus within our communities and keeping our population healthy. In some cases, those residents who benefit most from the Recite Me features, are those same people for whom shielding and public health messages have the highest importance. Communicating with them on issues such as mental health support, alterations to the delivery of support services and public health guidance is extremely important and Recite Me ensures that all our information can be delivered in a format that suits the needs of our residents. One of the website users from Sefton said I am Autism and Dyslexic and found that when using the Councils website, I can change the font to Dyslexia font and add a ruler to keep my place, which really helps me to understand the information I need to stay independent. I am happy that the Council use Recite Me as it is very helpful and very interesting.”
