This equates to a pretty staggering number \u2013 over 13 million people in the UK, and over 65 million in the US, for example.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%\" src=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/us\/wp-content\/ckeditor\/website\/Recite_Assistive_Data.png\" alt=\"20% world need support online\" \/><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">The internet can be a minefield for those with access barriers. On any given website, an access barrier can be any element of the design or formatting that prevents users from reading and understanding the content.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">The people who are most susceptible to access barriers are those who struggle with:<\/p><ul><li><p dir=\"ltr\">Decreased vision<\/p><\/li><li><p dir=\"ltr\">Learning difficulties<\/p><\/li><li><p dir=\"ltr\">Literacy<\/p><\/li><li><p dir=\"ltr\">Language\/linguistic problems<\/p><\/li><li><p dir=\"ltr\">Attention disorders<\/p><\/li><li><p dir=\"ltr\">Physical disabilities<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p dir=\"ltr\">Assistive technology provides solutions and support for all of these, making the online world more inclusive and an equal playing field for everyone.<\/p><h3><strong>So\u2026Why Don\u2019t ALL Companies Want to Provide Assistive Technology for Their Users?<\/strong><\/h3><p dir=\"ltr\">A fair question, given the possibility of adding to your market share with millions of new website visitors and customers. No matter what sector your organization sits in, ignoring 20% of the market is simply not good for business. Plus, there are other benefits to being inclusive, such as reduced legal risk and <a href=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/us\/news\/how-to-improve-brand-reputation-through-being-inclusive\">improved brand reputation<\/a>.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">The two most common objections we hear from prospective clients are that<em> \u201cOur site users don\u2019t need it\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201cThose who need it will have their own technology already\u201d<\/em>. Yet we know from experience that neither of these statements is true.<\/p><h3><strong>Busting Accessibility Myths<\/strong><\/h3><p dir=\"ltr\">The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that only 1 in 10 people have access to the assistive technology they need. For example, there are over 200 million people in the world with low vision who do not have access to assistive products to support them.<\/p><blockquote><p dir=\"ltr\"><em>\u201cAssistive technology enables people to live healthy, productive, independent, and dignified lives, and to participate in education, the labour market and civic life. Without assistive technology, people are often excluded, isolated, and locked into poverty, thereby increasing the impact of disability on a person, their family, and society.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>WHO, 2021<\/strong><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote><p dir=\"ltr\">So, onwards to myth-busting\u2026.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>1. \u201cOur Site Users Don\u2019t Need It\u201d <\/strong><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Wrong!<\/strong><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s a common reaction, mainly because many of the conditions that make websites inaccessible fall into the category of \u2018hidden disabilities\u2019, as they are not visible. Often, these conditions are kept purposefully hidden by those who have them for fear of drawing unwarranted attention to themselves or being discriminated against. This can be particularly true in the workplace environment.<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right;height: 311px;width: 300px\" src=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/us\/wp-content\/ckeditor\/website\/Recite_1_DidyouKnow.png\" alt=\"15% population is neurodiverse\" \/><\/h3><p dir=\"ltr\">Let\u2019s take <a href=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/us\/news\/web-accessibility-dyspraxia-supporting-neurodiversity-online\">dyspraxia<\/a> as an example. Many people haven\u2019t even heard of it, but it is a condition that affects around 10% of the population, and at least 3-4% in a significant way. So the chances are that within your website user base there will absolutely be individuals with dyspraxia who need to be supported. The same can be said of Dyslexia, Hyperlexia, and a myriad of other unseen conditions that impact on web accessibility.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">So rest assured, your users DO need assistive technology!<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">A side note to employers: The average cost of adjusting for employee accessibility is typically just a few hundred pounds\/dollars, and data shows that employees with disabilities take less time off and tend to stay with companies for longer. So any outlay is almost certainly recouped many times over.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>2. \u201cThose Who Need It Will Have Their Own Technology Already\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">Wrong again!<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">Put simply, if people were able to &#8211; and preferred to &#8211; use their own assistive technology, we wouldn\u2019t have seen the incredible increase in subscription coupled with the phenomenal rise in usage of the Recite Me toolbar over the last calendar year:<\/p><ul><li><p dir=\"ltr\">Over 1.8 million unique users.<\/p><\/li><li><p dir=\"ltr\">Over 10 million pages viewed with Recite Me enabled.<\/p><\/li><li><p dir=\"ltr\">Over 47 million clicks on the Recite Me toolbar to use features like our screen reader, translation services, and styling features.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%\" src=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/us\/wp-content\/ckeditor\/website\/Recite_1_ThoseWhoNeed.png\" alt=\"Recite Me help 1.8million people\" \/><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">Website users are deterred from using individual assistive technology tools for many reasons, including:<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Cost<\/strong> &#8211; At a time when those with disabilities can be particularly financially vulnerable, many simply can\u2019t afford the technology that is required. That\u2019s a hard no from us!<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Usability<\/strong> &#8211; Individual assistive technology (such as JAWS) will work on only the device on which it is installed. With most people now moving between pc, mobile, and tablet devices on a regular basis, this is incredibly restrictive.<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%\" src=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/us\/wp-content\/ckeditor\/website\/Recite_1_FunFact.png\" alt=\"Ross Linnett Dyslexia\" \/><\/h3><p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Functionality<\/strong> &#8211; Unlike most other assistive tools, Recite Me remembers each individual user&#8217;s preferences.
