With special emphasis on the role of the <a href=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/us\/news\/ada-compliance-in-california\/\">ADA in California<\/a>. The current version of WCAG is 2.2.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-cc88284 disable-default elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"cc88284\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-041fb24\" data-id=\"041fb24\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d128423 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d128423\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>The Unruh Civil Rights Act<\/h3><p>Enacted in 1959, the <a href=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/us\/news\/unruh-civil-rights-act-compliance\/\">Unruh Act<\/a> guarantees equal accommodations for all, including those with disabilities. Updated in 1992, it aligns with ADA standards, making ADA non-compliance synonymous with Unruh non-compliance.<\/p><p>While the Unruh Act was originally created for brick and mortar businesses with a physical presence and places of public accommodation, several court rulings have concluded that websites are places of public accommodation, in some cases extending to cover any website that California residents can access, no matter where the business is located.<\/p><p>The Unruh Civil Rights Act requires \u201c[f]ull and equal accommodations, advantages, facilities, privileges or services in all business establishments.\u201d This includes, but is not limited to, the following places:<\/p><ul><li>Hotels and motels<\/li><li>Nonprofit organizations that have a business purpose or are a public accommodation<\/li><li>Restaurants<\/li><li>Theaters<\/li><li>Hospitals<\/li><li>Barber shops and beauty salons<\/li><li>Housing accommodations \u2013 including rental housing and shared-economy housing<\/li><li>Public agencies<\/li><li>Retail establishments<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-b1b8916 disable-default elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"b1b8916\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-03b6b7d\" data-id=\"03b6b7d\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c90d6ef elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c90d6ef\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Proposed Legislation on the Horizon<\/h3><p>Initially, Bill AB 1757 was designed to address court consolidation. However, on June 12, 2023, the California Assembly&#8217;s Judiciary Committee replaced the contents with new legislative language. Bill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jdsupra.com\/legalnews\/california-assembly-bill-on-website-3393637\/\">AB1757<\/a> now aims to clarify how websites and mobile apps should be coded to be considered accessible to individuals with disabilities and comply with the ADA and Unruh Civil Rights Act.<\/p><p>If formally brought into the state legislature, AB1757 would require all businesses with websites and mobile apps to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards. This would be the first time any US governmental entity has officially codified WCAG 2.1 as a governing standard.
