The number of website accessibility lawsuits has been increasing year on year over the last decade, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessibility.com\/complete-report-2022-website-accessibility-lawsuits\">2,387 filed in 2022<\/a>. Some of the most memorable examples involving government bodies include:<\/p><ul><li><strong>The Department of Homeland Security (DHS)<\/strong> &#8211; Michael Leiterman, himself a lawyer with the DHS, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextgov.com\/emerging-tech\/2013\/05\/blind-agency-attorney-sues-cbp-over-tech-access\/63000\/\">filed a lawsuit against his employer<\/a> citing Section 508.<\/li><li><strong>The US Department of Education<\/strong> &#8211; Carlos Mora, a blind resident of Baltimore, <a href=\"https:\/\/thedailyrecord.com\/2009\/10\/28\/national-federation-of-the-blind-challenges-dept-of-ed-website\/\">filed a complaint<\/a> that the U.S.A. Learns website violated Section 508.<\/li><li><strong>The Social Security Administration (SSA)<\/strong> &#8211; Margot Downey, a blind Social Security beneficiary from Buffalo, New York, <a href=\"https:\/\/nfb.org\/about-us\/press-room\/national-federation-blind-and-blind-social-security-beneficiary-file-complaint\">took action against the SSA<\/a> for Section 508 violation.<\/li><li><strong>Small Business Administration (SBA)<\/strong> &#8211; Virgil Stinnett, a blind business owner from Honolulu, Hawaii, <a href=\"https:\/\/nfb.org\/about-us\/press-room\/national-federation-blind-and-blind-business-owner-file-complaint-small\">sued SBA<\/a> under Section 508, citing inaccessibility issues with his assistive technology.<\/li><li><strong>Minnesota Local Government<\/strong> &#8211; Noah J. McCourt, a disability advocate with autism, sued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govtech.com\/computing\/ada-lawsuit-targets-minnesota-local-government-sites.html\">Carver County and the cities of Norwood Young America and Chanhassen<\/a> in federal court for ADA Title II violation. In a survey of the 72 most popular government domains, the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation found that <a href=\"https:\/\/fcw.com\/digital-government\/2021\/06\/many-federal-websites-dont-meet-accessibility-requirements-study-finds\/258403\/\">30% of homepages didn&#8217;t meet minimum web accessibility standards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest issues with government websites is that most house numerous inaccessible PDFs that cannot be opened, read, or submitted by individuals using screen readers and other assistive technologies.<\/p>\n<p>However, PDFs are by no means the only access barrier. And it doesn\u2019t matter how good your website looks.
