href=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/us\/news\/section-508-compliance\/\">Section 508 Amendment to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973<\/a> requires all Federal agencies\u2019 electronic and information Legislation<\/b><\/p><p>The Accessible Canada Act (ACA) requires all Government of Canada websites and web applications to conform to World Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 Level AA. In addition, several individual provinces have their own independent accessibility acts that apply to private and public sector organizations alike. Examples include <a href=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/us\/news\/aoda-compliance\/\">Ontario<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/us\/news\/accessibility-for-manitobans-act-compliance\/\">Manitoba<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/us\/news\/nova-scotia-accessibility-act-compliance\/\">Nova Scotia<\/a>.<\/p><p><b>Current Web Accessibility Indicators<\/b><\/p><p>96.8% of home pages fail to comply with WCAG best practices (<a href=\"https:\/\/webaim.org\/projects\/million\/\">WebAim<\/a>).<\/p><p>Learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/us\/news\/aca-web-accessibility-law-in-canada\/\">Canadian web accessibility laws<\/a>.<\/p><h3>The UK<\/h3><p><b>Disability Prevalence<\/b><\/p><p>1 in 5 people (<a style=\"background-color: #ffffff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/healthandsocialcare\/disability\/articles\/nearlyoneinfivepeoplehadsomeformofdisabilityinenglandandwales\/2015-07-13\">Office of National Statistics<\/a>).<\/p><p><b>UK Web Accessibility Legislation<\/b><\/p><p>Web accessibility legislation in the UK falls under the Equality Act of 2010. The Equality Act encompasses information previously found in the Equal Pay Act of 1970 and the Disability Discrimination Act of 1995. Under the Equality Act, companies must make reasonable adjustments to make websites more inclusive. Public sector bodies are also expected to comply with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations of 2018.<\/p><p><b>Current Web Accessibility Indicators<\/b><\/p><p>Less than 1% of website home pages are likely to meet accessibility standards (AbilityNet).<\/p><h3>Australia<\/h3><h3 style=\"font-family: Lexend, sans-serif;letter-spacing: 0.3px\"><span style=\"color: #333333\"><b>Disability Prevalence<\/b><\/span><\/h3><p>1 in 6 people (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aihw.gov.au\/reports\/disability\/people-with-disability-in-australia\/contents\/people-with-disability\/prevalence-of-disability\">Australian Institute of Health and Welfare<\/a>).<\/p><p><b>Australian Web Accessibility Legislation<\/b><\/p><p>The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) requires equal online access for people with disabilities. Section 5 describes explicitly that inaccessible web content is discriminatory against people with disabilities. Since January 2018, all federal agencies and contractors must comply with the World Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) accessibility Level AA.<\/p><p><b>Current Web Accessibility Indicators<\/b><\/p><p>90% of websites are inaccessible to people with disabilities who rely on assistive technology (<a href=\"https:\/\/abilitynet.org.uk\/news-blogs\/less-1-website-home-pages-are-likely-meet-accessibility-standards\">AbilityNet<\/a>).<\/p><h3>The European Union<\/h3><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/news\/eu-web-accessibility-directive\/\">European Union (EU) Directive on the Accessibility<\/a> of Websites and Mobile Applications requires EU member states to ensure their websites and mobile apps meet common accessibility standards. The Directive uses the four principles of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0. As per the <a href=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/news\/european-accessibility-act\/\">European Accessibility Act<\/a>, businesses operating in the e-commerce sector must meet minimum accessibility requirements. However, each country also has specific laws that govern public and private sector web accessibility in more detail.<\/p><h3>France<\/h3><p><b>Disability Prevalence<\/b><\/p><p>1 in 5 people (<a href=\"https:\/\/private.disabilityin.org\/global\/france\/#:~:text=Disability%20affects%2012%20million%20French,action%20plans%20being%20set%20up.\">Disability: In<\/a>)<\/p><p><b>French Web Accessibility Legislation<\/b><\/p><p>Law N\u00b0 2005-102 ensures that disabled citizens have equal rights and opportunities. Businesses with an online presence are legally required to provide full online access to everyone under the R\u00e9f\u00e9rentiel G\u00e9n\u00e9ral d\u2019Accessibilit\u00e9 pour les Administrations (RGAA). RGAA legislation is based on WCAG guidelines with additional accessibility metrics and requirements for all public websites.<\/p><p><b>Current Web Accessibility Indicators<\/b><\/p><p>Only 2% of all websites meet best practice guidelines (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/media\/only-2-of-sites-meet-accessibility-standards-lets-change-that\/#:~:text=Today's%20websites%20fail%20to%20meet,This%20affects%20millions%20of%20people.\">AdWeek<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p><h3>Germany\u00a0<\/h3><p><b>Disability Prevalence<\/b><\/p><p>1 in 6 people (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.antidiskriminierungsstelle.de\/EN\/about-discrimination\/grounds-for-discrimination\/disability-and-chronic-disease\/disability-and-chronic-disease-node.html\">Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency<\/a>).<\/p><p><b>German Web Accessibility Legislation<\/b><\/p><p>There are two key pieces of web accessibility legislation. The Disability Equality Act (BGG) protects people with disabilities against discrimination, ensuring they have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. The Federal Ordinance on Barrier-Free Information Technology BITV 2.0 goes even further to provide benchmarks on website accessibility specifically, based on WGAC.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p><b>Current Web Accessibility Indicators<\/b><\/p><p>Only 3% of the internet is accessible to people with disabilities (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbestechcouncil\/2022\/10\/11\/whats-next-for-digital-accessibility\/\">Forbes<\/a>).<\/p><h3>Spain<\/h3><p><b>Disability Prevalence<\/b><\/p><p>8.5% of the population (<a href=\"https:\/\/private.disabilityin.org\/global\/spain\/\">Disability:In<\/a>).<\/p><p><b>Spanish Web Accessibility Legislation<\/b><\/p><p>The two primary website accessibility laws in Spain are Law 34\/2002 and Law 51\/2003. Both require government websites to conform to WCAG standards.
