Come March 31st, all public sector companies will be rolling out their budgets and development plans for the rest of 2021 and into 2022, and web accessibility provisions should absolutely be part of that.<\/p><p>Over the last couple of years, we\u2019ve seen a significant rise in <a href=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/au\/sector\/public-sector\">public sector organisations <\/a>that use our web accessibility software. In the last 6 months alone we have seen a 20% increase in the need for online support. Making sure a website is accessible and inclusive to all users is important for any business, but by the very nature of the services offered and the functions served by public sector bodies, it is arguably even more important for them.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right;width: 30%\" src=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/au\/wp-content\/ckeditor\/website\/Recite_Public_Budget_20.png\" alt=\"20% increase recite me usage\" \/>2021 has already been dubbed \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/au\/news\/2021-the-year-of-accessibility-a-mini-guide\">The Year of Accessibility<\/a>\u2019. Digital inclusion factors rank high in priorities for business development, and with more and more people relying upon online information, those in the public sector are under increasing pressure to keep their users updated with all of the relevant information and news.<\/p><h2><strong>Why is Website Accessibility So Important in the Public Sector?<\/strong><\/h2><p dir=\"ltr\">Looking towards the next financial year, public sector bodies need to be aware of a number of factors that affect digital accessibility\u2026<\/p><h3>Equal Access to information<\/h3><p dir=\"ltr\">We tend to think of the internet as a place where everyone has instant access to the information they need at all times, but that\u2019s simply not the case. Here in the UK <a href=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/au\/news\/assistive-technology-who-needs-it\">one in five people has a disability<\/a> that means they struggle to access information online. Examples include:<\/p><ul><li><p dir=\"ltr\">Visual impairments<\/p><\/li><li><p dir=\"ltr\">Learning difficulties<\/p><\/li><li><p dir=\"ltr\">Literacy and language barriers<\/p><\/li><li><p dir=\"ltr\">Neurological disorders<\/p><\/li><li><p dir=\"ltr\">Developmental disorders<\/p><\/li><li><p dir=\"ltr\">Physical disabilities<\/p><\/li><li><p dir=\"ltr\">Temporary disabilities<\/p><\/li><\/ul><h3>Customers in Vulnerable Circumstances<\/h3><p dir=\"ltr\">Any customers who struggle with one or more of the issues listed above can be considered vulnerable, as any inequality in access to information leads to an inequality of access to services. Plus, in challenging circumstances, vulnerability levels increase and those with accessibility needs fall further through the cracks as they struggle to keep up to date with changing information.<\/p><h3>Our Aging Population<\/h3><p dir=\"ltr\">As the ageing population increases, so does the percentage of the entire population with disabilities, visual impairments, and hearing loss. The <a href=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/au\/news\/supporting-the-elderly-online\">internet gives elderly people the ability <\/a>to connect with relatives and friends on a regular basis and is an important tool in allowing senior citizens to lead independent lives.<\/p><div><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%\" src=\"https:\/\/reciteme.com\/au\/wp-content\/ckeditor\/website\/Recite_Public_Budget_Fact.png\" alt=\"aging online fact\" \/><\/div><div><h3>Helping Self-Serving Accounts<\/h3><p dir=\"ltr\">With the continued closure of many retail outlets and points of face-to-face service, call centre teams are struggling to service the influx of callers. The deadline for compliance was September 23rd 2020, yet recent research showed that 40% of local authority websites\u2019 home pages still aren\u2019t accessible to people with disabilities, and far too many other public sector websites don\u2019t meet baseline accessibility standards either.<\/p><div><h3>The COVID-19 Effect<\/h3><p dir=\"ltr\">With many people confined to their homes, it has never been more critical that websites take into account all users, including those with disabilities and accessibility barriers. Essentially, this has changed the priority of web accessibility to be something that has to be done, rather than something that should be done.<\/p><h2 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>2020 Toolbar Usage<\/strong><\/h2><p dir=\"ltr\">During 2020 Recite Me could directly see the impact Covid19 was having on people accessing information online. This could be seen through a surge in toolbar usage with over 100,000 pages being made available to people with access needs in July alone.
