Firstly, you must include alternative text<\/a> (alt text) for any visual item. Alt text is a brief description, which is read aloud by screen readers, allowing visually impaired users to perceive the content of the image without needing to view it. However, for this to work effectively, your alt text must strike the balance between being concise and descriptive. Consider, for example, an image of a dog in a park. Alt text reading \u201cLabrador puppy running against wind in open green park\u201d paints a much clearer image than \u201cdog in park\u201d.<\/p>

Secondly, any text overlaid onto an image should be used with caution. Text in images isn\u2019t accessible to screen readers and can become distorted when scaled on different devices. If text must be used in an image, ensure it\u2019s also included in the alt text so that it can at least be transmitted to the user via different types of assistive technologies<\/a>.<\/p>

Finally, keep in mind the importance of responsive design. This means optimising image sizes to display properly on various devices, such as mobile phones, tablets, and desktops. Given that over 36% of all email opens worldwide now take place on mobile phones, ensuring responsive design and strong mobile accessibility<\/a> is something that cannot go amiss.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Text is the backbone of any email, the bread and butter if you will. So, ensuring it is readable is absolutely crucial. Readable text begins with choosing a clear, legible font, such as Arial, Verdana, or Helvetica, and avoiding overly decorative fonts that might be difficult to read for people with conditions such as dyslexia<\/a>.<\/p>

Font size is another key consideration. A minimum of 14px is recommended to ensure readability on various devices. Line height should be set at around 1.5 times the font size to create enough space between lines so that the eye does not have to strain.<\/p>

Now, while almost every email template comes pre-set with black text and a white background, it is still important to understand the role of colour contrasts and how that plays into email accessibility. High contrast between text and background ensures text is easily distinguishable, so that important information can be perceived without issue. Imagine, for example, trying to read an extract of light grey text on a white background. This would be challenging for anyone, never mind those with severe, or even mild, visual impairments<\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

To ensure accessibility, always maintain a sufficient contrast ratio<\/a> between text and background colours within your emails. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)<\/a> recommend a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text.<\/p>

You should also never rely solely on colour to convey a key message. For example, don\u2019t just use red to indicate an error\u2014pair it with an icon or text to ensure the message is clear to those who may not distinguish colours well. For example, highlighting an improperly entered form field in red does not clearly explain where or what the error is that needs to be addressed. Instead, opt for a message to the effect of, \u201cImportant action required! Email field missing \u201c@\u201d symbol\u201d.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
