Consider the physical and digital access needs of your passengers

This week Tyne & Wear Metro announced it will launch new “I need a seat” badges

They will make travelling easier for disabled passengers and others who need to sit down during their journey.

Nexus, which runs the metro, is offering the badges to passengers at all Nexus Travel Shops from Wednesday, May 17.

Great news for disabled passengers

The move is great news for disabled passengers, who won’t need to show any evidence of their disability to apply for a badge.

It’s wonderful to see Nexus make this move to help the physical accessibility of its services for disabled people.

As Recite Me is based in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, we are very pleased to see one of our local transport providers set a great example for others to follow.

Digital accessibility is as important as physical accessibility

But while improving physical accessibility for disabled passengers using public transport is vital, it’s also essential to consider digital accessibility.

For example, can disabled people do what they need to on your transport website?

Can they book a ticket with no problems, in as few steps as possible? Can they access timetables to all routes and journeys? Can they access travel updates such as details of delayed or cancelled services?

If the answer is no, Recite Me can help you.

Recite me works for transport companies

Transport companies like Arriva Bus UK make sure that disabled passengers can access all the information and features on their website by using web accessibility software Recite Me.

It has a range of features that allow visitors to customise a website in the way they need it to work for them.

They can use Recite Me to do things such as change font sizes and colours, select a text only version of the site, read text aloud (including PDFs), and customise the background colour.
