If you provide NHS or Adult Social Care services there is a new information standard you have to follow. The Accessible information Standard is going to be mandatory by the end of July 2016 and it applies to the accessibility of your website.
The Accessible Information Standard is being rolled out to make sure that disabled people have equal access to health and social care services. All the information you provide to your service users, patients and carers has to be accessible and understandable for everyone. This isn’t just a ‘nice-to-have’, it’s the law, see section 250 of the Health and Social Care Act 2012.
The Accessible Information Standard is a guide on how to make information accessible, making sure that your patients get information in different formats if they need it: including Large Print, Braille, Easy Read and via email. The Standard also covers how you can support people’s communication needs, for example by offering a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter, deafblind manual interpreter or an advocate.
Your website is your single most important communications and marketing tool and it is vitally important that it works hard for you. Web-based communications are the most cost-effective way of ensuring your message reaches a large audience. Whether you are an NHS Trust, Foundation Trust, GP Practice or organisation that pays for and makes decision about NHS and Adult Social Care services, your website needs to be accessible the public – in particular to those with a disability, impairment or sensory loss.
More and more information is being communicated online. The case for web accessibility is strong, but as few as 14% of websites are actually accessible. If you are providing information on suitable long-term care, medication, or new services starting at your Trust, Practice or Surgery, you need to be sure that everyone can access your website content the way they need it. For patients, carers and parents or service users at home, in the office or on the go, we can make your website more accessible.
